Being a Beginner Again

Posted on Posted in All Posts, Stories

I was recently reminded of a this great quote.

“The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again — less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.”
– Steve Jobs

I’ve been blessed to have some modest success working in music.  I’ve had some very cool opportunities and have accomplished many of my goals.  I’m of course not on Jobs’ level, but I definitely feel the pressure and heaviness of always wanting to project the image of success among my friends and colleagues – even when it’s not there as much as I’d like.  Maybe you can relate to that too.

However, today I’m started something new, and it feels good – I’m turning my otherwise static website into a blog.  I’ve been wanting to experiment with this for a long time.  I could give you many excuses why I didn’t start sooner, but honestly, it’s because of one reason – fear of what you will think.

So, I’ve decided to give myself permission to be a beginner again!  I’m definitely less sure about how this will go, but I’m excited to have fun with it, try some stuff, make some mistakes, and hopefully experience some of the creative breakthroughs mentioned in the quote above.

So here are some details about what’s in store.

  • I’ll be posting to at least once per week
  • I’ll be experimenting with writing, video, and audio.
  • The goal of every post will be to provide value upfront – (more on this topic later)
  • Subjects will include: guitar tips, musicianship, networking, music business/marketing… and probably some lame jokes 🙂
